Leicester moved out of the Championship relegation places after first-half goals from Ben Nelson and Abdul Fatawa earned a 2-0 win at home to Bristol City.
West Brom can push the Foxes back into the bottom three if they beat Southampton on Wednesday night but Gary Rowett's side have at least stopped a run of four straight home defeats as well as ending a winless league run dating back to January 5.
Leicester's success doubled as a third straight league loss for Bristol City, who were also knocked out of the FA Cup by Port Vale this month and are seeing play-off hopes fade fast.
The visitors forced a series of early corners that saw efforts from Sam Morsy and Ross McCrorie deflected behind and Neto Borges head marginally over before Leicester replied with an attack that ended with goalkeeper Radek Vitek getting a hand to Stephy Mavididi's shot from inside the box.
The Foxes took the lead in the 13th minute through Nelson's header from a free-kick to the back post delivered by Jordan James. Defender Nelson outjumped a cluster of challengers to power past Vitek.
Mavididi hit a post in the 24th minute after Borges had let Fatawu get away from him on the right but Leicester doubled their lead four minutes later.
Bobby De Cordova-Reid attempted an acrobatic shot from Mavididi's cross from the right - and succeeded in setting Fatawu up for a volley of his own from beyond the back post that went in off Vitek's arm.
The visitors forced some more corners towards the end of a half that saw Leicester captain Hamza Choudhury booked for a foul on Scott Twine.
Max Bird was replaced by Mark Sykes for the second period as Bristol City sought a way back into the game but Leicester remained on top in the opening exchanges.
Jason Knight slid in to stop Fatawu putting Jordan Ayew in, with the ball ending up flying narrowly wide of the Bristol City goal.
Fatawu burst forward at pace again to unleash a long-ranger that flashed wide, and Borges was booked for fouling him during Leicester's next attack.
Bristol City were awarded a penalty in the 63rd minute when Emil Riis was brought down by Nelson chasing Tomi Horvat's pass into the box.
Riis took the spot-kick himself but Leicester goalkeeper Jakub Stolarczyk dived to his left to make an excellent save.
Fatawu continued to torment the Robins with his pace and fired off a 25-yarder that was only just too high. Fatawu had another go soon after and saw his shot deflected wide by team-mate Caleb Okoli, who collided with a post trying to turn it in.
Leicester's Gary Rowett:
"We ticked a few boxes tonight - a clean sheet and we won the game. It was super important to get that one to build everyone's confidence on what we are doing.
"Clearly the team should have more confidence from that, it shows they can do it so it gets that box ticked when it had been a while.
"That feeling in the stadium when the fans see the team doing everything it can to keep a clean sheet and win, that helps everybody - it was big for us.
"The crowd got behind us superbly and who doesn't want that? Who doesn't want a full stadium singing and everybody going home seeing a team that desperately wants to win?
"I did remind the players that good teams go and do it again and again and again. It is one win but it shows a nice clear pathway of what's required."
Bristol City's Gerhard Struber:
"It is a really painful realisation at the moment with our performance.
"I would say I am not disappointed - I am really angry with how we played football below our standard, our typical profile.
"I cannot be happy, it is unacceptable that we had a performance in the first half like that. I missed the aggression, the intensity and also the directness.
"We have to be much better in the opponent's third. The second half was much better and we had chances but we could not use it.
"I am disappointed in how we dealt in big moments with chances and also how cheaply we give away goals."
